Summer Solstice Style

It's summertime! Long days, watermelon, and coconut-scented sunscreen are some of the sensory pleasures of the season. This week we've escaped back home to southern New England for a week at the beach, ending with our annual lobster dinner on the 4th of July.

In anticipation, this gave me a perfect reason to compile a few accessories for the season. Those that made it into my crisp, new L.L. Bean tote:

KJL pearl resin necklace. I found a very similar one on sale during a stroll into Saks downtown. I have been pulled aside on the street, in restaurants and on public transportation for compliments. The bold chain links pop when worn on black, stripes, or any summery color.

I have become so much more sun savvy when hitting the beach, and will be bringing along this J. Crew wide-brim straw hat. The floppy straw folds flat and pops right back into shape, making for easy packing.

Same goes with the chic slim Havaianas, accentuating pedicured toes wearing Essie's coral-toned vermillionaire.

Social Studies

Anthropologie is finally in city proper, opening this Friday! The window displays are up, and I've already eyed a few things I need to investigate further.

I love the piping and trim on so many of their pieces. The collection is so dainty yet versatile, able to be pulled off for the office and just as easily for a picnic or party.

And the home section will let me decorate as I like to dress. Does anyone else notice that correlation? I wear the same palettes as the paint I've picked for our rooms-- with an occasional color that pops. Like these gorgeous yellow sandals.
Case in point-- this cocktail ring knob. I would definitely wear this on my finger. And I wish this ikat bowl also came in the form of a size S shirt, please.

New Activity

This is why I have been MIA. I like my new gym so much that I now voluntarily wake up at 5am to join my husband for a workout before we start our day. The new Urban Active in Bakery Square officially opened this week, and it was worth the wait. The industrial-sized space is gorgeous! Filled with brand new equipment, dozens of cardio options, a 20m pool, it also has a cardio theater that loops a new film each day for sweating and viewing pleasure. My husband insisted that I post about the gym, citing that it has increased our quality of life. In more ways than one.

Sweet Tarts

Pittsburgh has been getting sweeter (and a little more tangy) in the past year. Four different fro-yo shops have opened around the city, each with special menus and toppings. The Post-Gazette had a nice review this week (and I also agree with their recommendation for Trader Joe's tart yogurt,) and Pop City also covered this new trend too.  I have only been to Sweetlix downtown on Liberty and it's just a matter of pure convenience. A friend and I have twice diverted our afternoon caffeine run and enjoyed a pomegranate and tart-swirled treat. I'd like to try Squirrel Hill's Razzy Fresh and create my own masterpiece where they offer self-serve soft serve by the ounce.

I lived way too close for comfort to Pinkberry in the Upper East Side, and would sometimes endure the longgg line for the tangy treat. Fortunately for us, the craze is more tempered here.

05 June 2010

For no other reasons than it being a rainy day and me finding these in the forgotten inspiration file, I am sharing these pictures. (Most likely saved from Domino, Design*Sponge or Apartment Therapy. )

These were saved a few years ago, and I find similarities from each picture to what I've done to the house. There is something so therapeutic about the carefully curated pieces in each picture. I wish I would have thought of a bold wallpaper border like the last picture! I love that with the shag rug and tree-trunk-like coffee tables.

Pack it in

So much to do this weekend, and so little time. I am pretty sure that's always the case, but especially for these forthcoming days:

First Fridays at the Frick starts tonight! Pack up your picnic (and melamine plates!), or pick up a box dinner from the Cafe at the Frick and enjoy the theatrical Grande Romanza performance on the lawn.

Three Rivers Arts Festival: a week-long celebration with local and regional artists, great activities including yoga in the park, flameworking with Pittsburgh Glass Center, and a line-up of star performances. (Ingrid Michaelson is scheduled for Thursday, June 10 at 8:15pm!)

Take a road trip to Washington, PA for some serious shopping: the highly anticipated, newly-opened Saks Outlet, and the bi-annual All-Clad Sale.

The All-Clad Seconds Sale is all day today and tomorrow at the Washington County Fairgrounds. Of course, Martha is a huge All-Clad fan and shared her fascinating tour of their facility when she was in town last month. A closer option: stop at Crate in Greentree for the same great offering through Sunday.

Happy Summer Weekend!

A New Canvas

It's worth checking out Canvas from Lands' End. I didn't think I'd ever be saying this, and I still need to run up to Ross Park Mall to try on a few pieces, but the new collection available at Sears might give J.Crew a run for the money. Canvas is J.Crew before it added ruffles, sequins and antique wash: classic Americana.

I know most of my generation abandoned Lands' End when our parents stopped buying school clothes for us, and I remember those items lasted forever. (I'm pretty sure my husband still uses his 20-year-old Lands' End bag for casual weekend trips.) I am ready to place an order and mix and match some of these classics with my colorful J.Crew and Marc Jacobs pieces (like the cute boatneck top, above.)

The open cotton sweater vest is tied with a gorgeous buttery leather belt.
Another great belt cinching a classic black shirtdress. The accessories and footwear are worth a peek too.
